Treo 600, AIM, SMS

July 2nd, 2004 · 2 Comments

The handling of SMS messages is one of the coolest features of the Treo 600. They’re handled almost as IM messages, which is really how I’ve used them, both on the Treo and pre-Treo. Playing into this great Treo functionality, AOL has a feature that when you’re listed as ‘Away’, you can have your account forward messages to a mobile number via SMS. It’s unbelievably useful and such a seamless transition, when I’m away from my desk(s), messages reach my on cell.

The latest firmware release severely hobbled this functionality. All ‘forwarded’ messages come through as being sent by aolalerts@aol.com, which essentially means that you can’t reply to them, or least not to the right recipient. I’d like to think that this wasn’t done to increase the subscriptions to the T-Mobile AIM Service, but it sure seems like it…

I’ve emailed support, to no avail… I’d rather not have a separate AIM app running, I really like the AIM -> SMS bridging functionality. If anyone has figured out a way to make this work, leave a comment, I’d be eternally grateful.

Update: Thanks to PalmOne support, I got it working.
