Treo AIM -> SMS Issue Solved

July 22nd, 2004 · 2 Comments

A follow up to last week’s post, outlining the problems with PalmOne’s recent Treo updater.

After two weeks, I heard back from PalmOne. T-Mobile was much quicker to respond, but suggested that I contact PalmOne… grr.

Their suggested fix was for an unrelated problem, where a Treo user can’t add text to an SMS message. The issue supposedly only affects Treos with European carriers. But, figuring that it couldn’t hurt to install the updates anyway, I downloaded http://web.palmone.com/profilespecs/CarrierProfiles.pdb and http://web.palmone.com/profilespecs/NetworkProfiles.pdb from the Treo and reset the phone in between each one. Sure enough, it fixed the problem that I was having.

On a related note, the disclaimer in the support email prohibits redistribution. No wonder it takes 2 weeks to respond… People can’t find the solutions online.

Weird stuff. I’ve looked on the treocentral.com discussion boards, but it’s still not clear to me how AIM works with it. I’d rather not pay for the web service, but do AIM through SMS instead. Does that work with the way you’ve described above? I haven’t bought a phone yet, but there is a 40pic/250txt promo that looks like a good deal and adequate for my IM needs as I don’t chat a whole lot anyway. Also, if you’re not signed in to AIM on your computer, will it still forward the AIMs to your phone; is there a way to show as being online on your phone without having the web service enabled? Thanks……

Somewhat related, on the other hand, what if I go with ONLY the web service? Is txt messaging and pics an extra charge if I don’t order the pics/txt services? Seems like there would be freeware that can handle these tasks. Thanks, I’ll probably post on treocentral with all these questions, as well!

Yep, after updating the profiles, the AIM / SMS bridging does work really well as described. The messages will work against your txt quota. If you register your phone with AOL, then any time you’re away or not logged on a small phone icon will appear next to your name in the buddy lists.

We signed everybody up with the unlimited network plan ($19.99), so the pic/txt sending is unlimited, but there’s some ambiguity regarding their T-Zones plan ($5.99). A friend signed up with the T-Zone plan and supposedly has unlimited network access, but I haven’t looked into it at all.
